Understanding Sizing on World Rugby ShopUpdated 16 days ago

All product sizes on World Rugby Shop are listed in US sizing unless otherwise noted in the product description. Because rugby gear comes from global brands, sizing can vary slightly by product—so it’s important to review details before selecting your size.

Apparel & Jerseys

  • All apparel is listed in US Men’s / Unisex sizing unless the product title specifically states “Women’s”
    • Women’s items are designed with a different cut and fit, and will always be clearly labeled in the product title
    • If you typically wear women’s sizing, you may prefer to size down in unisex items depending on your preferred fit
  • Most rugby apparel has an athletic fit, designed to sit closer to the body in order to avoid jersey tackles
  • Brands like Canterbury, Castore, and Macron may run more fitted.

Recommendation:
If you prefer a more relaxed fit or plan to layer underneath, consider sizing up.

Jersey Fit Types

Many of our jerseys are labeled with one of the following fit types:

  • Performance Fit (Test):
Designed for match play. This is the tightest fit, sitting close to the body with minimal excess material. Ideal for players who want a true on-field feel. No jersey tackles here!
  • Athletic Fit (Regular):
A slightly more relaxed version of performance fit. Still tapered, but with a bit more room through the chest and waist. This is the most common fit across rugby jerseys.
  • Relaxed Fit:
A looser, more casual fit. Offers more room throughout the body and sleeves, making it ideal for everyday wear or layering.

Recommendation:
If you prefer a looser fit or are between sizes, consider sizing up—especially in performance or athletic styles.

Important Note on Personalized Jerseys

Jerseys personalized with a name or number are final sale and are not eligible for return or exchange.

If you’re unsure about sizing or fit, we recommend ordering a non-personalized item first to confirm your size before purchasing personalization on future orders.

Rugby Boots

  • Most boots are listed in US Men’s sizing
  • Exceptions:
    • IDA boots (women-specific fit) are in US Women's sizing
    • adidas Avaglide range (women-specific fit) are in US Women's sizing
  • If a product uses UK or EU sizing, a conversion chart will be provided
  • Most boots fit true to size, unless otherwise noted

Fit Tips:

  • Boots should feel snug and secure, but not tight or painful
  • Your toes should not press firmly against the front of the boot
  • Leather boots may stretch slightly over time; synthetic boots will not

For wider feet:

Fit can vary significantly by brand and model. Here’s how our main options compare:

  • New Balance 442 (Wide):
Offered in a wide fit, but runs only slightly wider than standard. Not a true 2E, but a good option for mildly wider feet.
  • Mizuno (Best for Wide Fits):
    • Monarcida: True 2E wide fit
    • Waitangi: True 4E super wide fit
These are the most reliable options for players needing consistent width.
  • adidas:
Generally runs more narrow than other brands.
    • RS15 range: Narrowest fit
    • Kakari range: More accommodating, but still on the narrower side overall
  • Canterbury:
    • Speed range: Narrowest fit
    • Phoenix range: Standard/medium fit
    • Stampede range: Widest fit, especially in the toe box
  • Gilbert:
Often feels slightly wider in the forefoot, but more standard through the heel

Recommendation:
If you have wider feet, Mizuno (Monarcida or Waitangi) will provide the most consistent fit. For moderate width, the New Balance 442 Wide is a solid option.

Protective Gear & Headwear

Sizing for items like scrum caps, shoulder pads, and mouthguards varies by brand. Most products include measurement guidelines (in inches or centimeters) on the product page to help you choose the right size.

International Sizing

If a product uses UK, EU, or other international sizing, it will be clearly noted in the product description.

As a general guide:

  • UK shoe sizes are typically one full size smaller than US sizes
    (Example: US Men’s 10 = UK 9)
