Finding the Best Boot SizeUpdated a month ago
Getting the right size rugby boot is essential for comfort, performance, and injury prevention. Here’s how to get it right the first time:
Start with Your Usual Shoe Size
Rugby boots tend to fit similarly to running shoes from the same brand. If you’re switching brands, double-check the size chart on the product page.
Fit Guidelines
Boots should feel snug but not tight.
Your toes should not be crushed, but there shouldn’t be excessive room either.
You should feel stable and supported with no uncomfortable pressure points.
Indoor Try-On Best Practices
Before using boots outdoors, we strongly recommend trying them on indoors to test the fit. For SG boots, consider trying them on while on carpet to minimize chance of slipping if you are not used to wearing metal studs on hard surfaces. Best practices:
Wear the same socks you’d wear for training or matches—ideally thick rugby or match-weight socks.
Lace the boots securely and stand, walk, pivot, and simulate running motion on a clean indoor surface.
Check that your toes have slight wiggle room without pressure on the tips.
Make sure the boot holds your ankle firmly without excessive movement. A loose heel or collar can lead to blisters.
If anything feels off—pinching, slipping, or awkward flex—it’s a sign that the fit isn’t quite right.
Width Considerations by Brand
Mizuno: We have some wider options. The Monarcida Neo III Select SG is a standard wide fit, while the Waitangi II CL SG is super wide.
New Balance: Offers a wide version comparable to the Monarcida fit. Standard New Balance boots fit similar to Gilbert and Canterbury.
Adidas: Generally runs narrow—best suited for athletes without wide feet.
Gilbert, Canterbury: Standard fit, but Canterbury boots in particular have a generous toe box for a non-wide boot.
Break-in Period
New boots may feel a bit stiff at first, but they’ll soften up with use. A good fit should feel comfortable from the start—even if it’s snug.
Clearance Policy Reminder
Clearance-priced boots are final sale and cannot be returned. Please double-check your size and fit before purchasing these items.
⚠️ Important Reminder:
Boots that have been worn outside, show signs of wear, or have visible dirt or stud marks cannot be returned or exchanged as stated in our Return Policy and the Rugby Boot Returns FAQ. Please only try them on indoors and on a clean surface to ensure they remain in original, unworn condition. We strongly recommend testing fit before any use to keep return eligibility intact.
