Finding the Best Boot SizeUpdated 14 days ago
Choosing the right rugby boot size is key for comfort, control, and performance on the field. Here’s how to get it right the first time.
Quick Fit Guide
- Start with your normal running shoe size
- Boots should feel snug, not tight
- If you’re between sizes, go up half a size
- For wider feet, consider Mizuno or Canterbury Stampede models
Start with Your Usual Size
Use your regular running shoe size as a starting point. Keep in mind that fit can vary by brand and model, so adjustments may be needed depending on the boot.
Fit Guidelines
- Boots should feel secure and snug, but not painful
- Your toes should not press firmly against the front of the boot
- There should be slight wiggle room in the toe box
- Your heel should stay locked in without slipping
Material Matters:
- Leather boots may stretch slightly over time
- Synthetic boots will hold their shape and not stretch
Indoor Try-On Best Practices
Before using boots outdoors, always try them on indoors to test the fit:
- Wear the same socks you’d use for training or matches
- Walk, pivot, and simulate movement on a clean indoor surface
- Make sure there are no pressure points or slipping
- Test on carpet if using soft ground (metal stud) boots
If anything feels off—pinching, heel lift, or pressure—the fit isn’t right.
Width Considerations by Brand
Fit can vary significantly by brand and model. Here’s how our main options compare:
- New Balance 442 (Wide):
Offered in a wide fit, but runs only slightly wider than standard. Not a true 2E, but a good option for mildly wider feet. - Mizuno (Best for Wide Fits):
- Monarcida: True 2E wide fit
- Waitangi: True 4E super wide fit
These are the most reliable options for players needing consistent width.
- adidas:
Generally runs more narrow than other brands.- RS15 range: Narrowest fit
- Kakari range: More accommodating, but still on the narrower side overall
- Canterbury:
- Speed range: Narrowest fit
- Phoenix range: Standard/medium fit
- Stampede range: Widest fit, especially in the toe box
- Gilbert:
Often feels slightly wider in the forefoot, but more standard through the heel
Break-In Expectations
New boots may feel slightly stiff at first, but they should still be comfortable from the start. Boots that feel painful or overly tight will not improve with wear.
⚠️ Important Reminder:
Boots that have been worn outside, show signs of wear, or have visible dirt or stud marks cannot be returned or exchanged as stated in our Return Policy and the Rugby Boot Returns FAQ. Please only try them on indoors and on a clean surface to ensure they remain in original, unworn condition. Always test fit before ANY outdoor use.
